Mod Shoulder Bags

The beginning of the 1960’s saw the emergence of a number of different distinctive youth culture factions. One of these groups known as the ‘Mods’ placed a high emphasis on their appearance and in particular their fashion styles. This led to the emergence of a number of iconic designs which remain popular today, earning them their ‘Retro’ icon status such as the distinctive ‘Target’ emblem often seen on ‘Mod’ clothing and shoulder bags. As the 1960’s progressed, musical tastes diversified and Mods began to follow a wide range of music from the UK, the US as well as the West Indies with ‘Ska’, ‘Rock Steady’,’Blue Beat’.

The early 1960’s spawned two distinct youth groups aka ‘The Mods’ and ‘The Rockers’. Whilst the ‘Rockers’ were more associated with Motor Cycle riding and the wearing Black Leather outfits and listening to musicians such as Gene Vincent, the ‘Mods’ rode motor Scooters and followed more of a fashion statement alongside their love for musicians such as ‘The Who’ and the emerging Tamla Motown groups such as ‘Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ and their iconic songs such as ‘Heatwave’.

Whilst there was a shot in the arm to the Mods with the release of The Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’ album and accompanying film as well as retro inspired bands such as ‘The Jam’ led by Paul Weller and the huge popularity of the ‘Two Tone’ label.

Fast forward to today and the famous ‘Target’ image and iconic Italian Scooter brand logos are often seen at music festivals.
